GILLINGHAM CELEBRATES PRIDE WINNIPEG 2022 THIS WEEKEND
(Winnipeg) – Mayoral candidate Scott Gillingham will be celebrating diversity and inclusion by
participating in Pride Winnipeg 2022 festivities this upcoming weekend. He will march in
Sunday’s parade alongside city council colleagues and then spend some time with campaign
supporters at The Forks festival site.
“It is important for everyone in our community to come together for Pride Winnipeg 2022 to
help celebrate diversity and inclusion,” Gillingham said. “Everybody in our great city deserves
to be openly accepted, treated with respect, and shown compassion as equals. As a proud
Winnipegger, I know how Pride Winnipeg 2022 contributes to a vibrant summer in the city and
I celebrate that along with all 2SLGBTQQIA Manitobans.”
In advance of Sunday’s parade, Gillingham confirmed support for the traditional parade route
down Portage Avenue, which is being used this Sunday. In 2019, the parade route returned to
Portage Avenue after a brief experiment of using Broadway to more directly get to The Forks.
“If I am fortunate to be elected Mayor, I commit to support the continued tradition of having
the Pride Winnipeg parade take place along Portage Ave,” said Gillingham. “The history of the
parade and the signal that is sends in routing it through Portage & Main is not lost upon me.”
Gillingham also noted that the City of Winnipeg budget waived fees in 2022 for Use of Street
and Special Event permits required by festivals such as Pride Winnipeg, or Transcona’s Hi
Neighbour, also taking place this weekend.
“After missing out on regular festival activity for two years due to the pandemic, this was a
small, but meaningful, recognition that these groups bring so much to the people of Winnipeg
and that they are still hurting financially,” said Gillingham. “We had to help ensure festivals
like Pride, Hi Neighbour and all other street festivals and block parties have the successful
returns they deserve.”
Scott Gillingham will be partaking in the Hi Neighbour Festival on Saturday, June 4th and
then marching in the Pride Winnipeg parade and taking in the festival site activities on
Sunday, June 5th.
